I have to thank my friends from the weekend again. One of the kids that came over brought his old bionicles for Riley since the store didn't have any new ones. Riley chose to take the bionicles to the hospital with him as part of his entertainment bag of goodies. He had wanted to take the dog I said that dogs weren't allowed and how about a stuffed animal. I guess he is too old for stuffed animals, so I was glad he found something we both found acceptable. We packed PB and J with an apple for lunch since Riley didn't want the hospital food. I brought my cool medifast packets, just add water and instant meal.
The hospital is busy after a three day weekend. But the wait honestly goes quickly. I read the paper. My cell wont take a charge so tonight I am going to go buy a new phone service package and a free phone after we are through.
They call us in to get the blood work. The technician that draws the blood comes in and Riley decides on an IV so he only has to be poked once. Well, he is so thin she puts the needle in and hits an artery. He spills out blood. She has to hold his arm for 20 minutes to get the bleeding stopped. As she waits holding his arm she askes what he is diagnosed with and I tell her. You can see her flinch involuntarily. She says she picked the wrong patient to hit the artery. We decide to wait for the blood tests in hopes that she doesn't have to poke him again but the test results come back with platelets at 7000. I figured as much when he wouldn't stop bleeding from the needle hole. Then she has to poke him again to get the IV in. She was going to switch arms but his other arm is pretty bruised already from last week. The IV has to go into the bleeding arm.
She really tried to be careful. It was just one of those moments.
After that everything went pretty smoothly. Tom was hungery so I go buy him a $6 sandwich. They dont even have white bread. He has to eat whole wheat. Thursday I will pack Tom lunch also. None of us needs to be cranky from hunger. Our post numbers are back. We'll be going home soon. The way this works we get released just in time for rush hour traffic.

Thank you for the update. We are thinking about all of you. Love ya, Teresa
ReplyDeleteTell Riley I'm proud of him. I would not have let her try to do the IV.
ReplyDeleteI'm a chicken when it comes to needles. I also don't call them technicians, I call them VAMPIRES.
